OUR BRAND

I am Ndati. Meaning ‘courage and bravery’ in Sine-Saloum, I was named after my father’s mother, a person of principles who took a stand to preserve African culture.

As a person of mixed African heritage who grew up all over Senegal, I have always been fascinated by the mix of cultures in West Africa and inspired by the region’s heritage, beauty, stories and traditions.

At ceremonies across West Africa, children, brides and grandmothers have worn traditional fabrics for centuries, such as pagne-tissé de la patrie (‘woven cloth of the homeland'). From Senegal (Serou Rabal) and Burkina Faso (Faso dan Fani) to Ghana (Kente) and Ivory Coast (Baoulé), these cotton cloths are woven with the spirit of the ethnicities that crafted them, but face the threat of cheap, low quality imitations from abroad.

Faced with this unwelcome trend, I set up Ndati to preserve this ancient craft for generations to come.

For me, it’s not only important to celebrate the quality, beauty and originality of West African design, but support the local artisans who weave each stitch with our cultural heritage.
